Course Description. In this course you
will be using Adobe Photoshop 7.0 to learn how to create and optimize graphics
for the web, retouch photographs, create digital collages, use a digital camera
and scanner, and more.
Sierra Sands faculty and staff who take this course will receive their own
fully licensed copy of Photoshop 6.0 for use at home on classwork and extra
curricular projects.

Course Objectives:
Upon successful complete of this course, the student will be able to:
- Acquire digital images from various input devices, such as flatbed scanner,
digital camera, and digital video.
- Choose the appropriate method for making selections in an image using selection
tools, quick mask, alpha channels and /or paths.
- Utilize the several methods for loading and editing selections, such as
adding to or subtracting from, transforming, expanding, contracting, growing,
and feathering selections.
- Properly interpret a histogram and utilize image adjustment features such
as Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation, and Variations.
- Effectively utilize target values with Levels and Curves.
- Perform detailed color correction with the brush, dodge, burn, and sponge
tools.
- Solve color correction problems through an understanding of basic color
theory, the RGB and CMYK color models.
- Correct out-of-gamut colors in the CMYK and web color models.
- Create duotone, tritone, or quadtone images.
- Understand pre-press issues.
- Colorize a black and white photograph.
- Demonstrate that he/she can accurately isolate intricate foreground imagery
from its background with the Extract function.
- Demonstrate principles of composition through digital photography and digital
artwork.
- Create aesthetic compositions using layers and the various layer options,
including layer styles, layer blending modes, layer masks, clipping groups
and adjustment layers.
- Create an image of photographic quality with multiple still images. The
composite image should have consistent and realistic lighting, reflections,
and perspective. Throughout.
- Begin to discover a personal style for solving creative problems.
- Combine raster and vector images in artwork, understanding the benefits
and limitations of each image type of image.
- Incorporate typography in a composition.
- Apply advanced filter techniques.
- Demonstrate the procedures for batch processing of images.
- Optimize graphics for web delivery balancing the need for small file sizes
yet maintain image and color quality.
- Create icon and symbol sets that communicate immediately, contain visual
consistency throughout the set, and are rendered with technical skill.
- Create images that can be seamlessly tiled for 3D texture maps or web backgrounds.
